The language of this country a millennium ago was very different to modern English. We shall consider the linguistic legacy of those who lived here and developed the way we speak and write.
Modern English has only emerged in the last five hundred years or so, overcoming considerable obstacles in the form of prejudice and local cultural differences.
A sustained effort by generations of people has led to the language we know as ‘standard English’.
This course will discuss the process.
Dr. Platts studied English and medieval English culture at York and Birmingham before a career in teaching in England, Oman and Pakistan.
