We are pleased to welcome back, university tutor in History, Art and Architecture, Wendy McNeil..
The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was formed by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais and later joined by Burne-Jones. They sought to return to the abundant detail, intense colours and complexity of 14th Century Italian art. Their principles were taken up by many other important Victorian followers.
This course will explore their sources of inspiration including the female models or ‘stunners’ as they were known and with whom the artists became involved.
Initially absorbed with painting truth in nature they progressed to an interest in literature, romance and symbolism dominated by Rossett, Burne-Jones and Morris. This progression will be traced against the background of the growth of the middle classes in Victorian England and its impact on the Pre-Raphaelites.
